Tonight Franz Ferdinand

Tonight Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand kicks so much ass, they need more feet! The groups newest release, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, is the without a doubt one of the best releases in the last year musically and is starting 2009 with a bar raising submission that other bands may only hope to reach. Some of the reviews on Amazon call out Franz Ferdinand on going pop, while others love the direction the band is going in. I think the complainers are the ones who only want the band to themselves and see the growth and expansion of the bands music as a direct assault on their snobbery. That is too bad for them.

The release starts with a kicker in Ulysses and from there it is a wild ride. Franz steps on the gas with the Ulysses and does not let up until track number 5, Twilight Omens, which is a subtle mood change and softer than the previous tracks. Tonight picks back up with track 6, Bite Hard and from there Franz Ferdinand starts to go into newer territory, but the coolness of the vocals and the funky, moody, danceable instrumentation works to a pleasant surprise.

Even though I can practically play Tonight: Franz Ferdinand from end to end, hot tracks for me include Ulysses, Turn It On, No You Girls, Bite Hard and What She Came For. Honorable mention goes to Lucid Dreams, because I’ll be damned if that baseline doesn’t thump like some old school late 70’s early 80’s funk before it collapses into an indescribable collage of electric sounds.

The Macbook Air Song – Yael Naim New Soul

You can download “New Soul” by Yael Naim from iTunes or watch the video on Youtube. Sadly, when I check iTunes, I don’t see the MacBook Air song (Yael Naim New Soul) available as a ringtone, only as a single or album.

Kanye West – Graduation

Kanye West – Graduation

As far as music goes, if you want good music, Kanye West’s Graduation, is an enjoyable release. One of the few rap releases where you can listen without skipping half of the tracks. Highlights include stadium anthems like “You Can’t Tell Me Nothing”, “Stronger” and “Champion”. You may skip “Drunk and Hot Girls” but on occasion the mood may be right for that too.

Lupe Fiasco Food and Liquor

Lupe Fiasco Food and Liquor

Lupe Fiasco dropped recently. If you’ve been under a rock, you’re obviously unaware. Sucks to be you. However, the recent Lupe Fiasco release Food Liquor may be to this generation what Illmatic and Nevermind was over a decade ago to the previous.

A unique collage of sounds and surprising lyrics, Lupe’s words provide a much needed break from gun-clapping, coke-slinging and street life often mercilessly lobbed upon your ears. Musically Food and Liquor stands on its’ own but if you like N.E.R.D., Kanye West or Andre 3000 most likely you would have no problem with Lupe.

I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

So last week, we did a silent release of the Entertainment section of BigBerries. There is still no link on the navigation bar and probably won’t be for some time, but you will have access through the article links. Last week was a post about FMA and the FMA movie release.

This week the release is music and the most current release of Yo La Tengo, I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass. This album is pretty bold and moves all over the place. You have to listen to it yourself to really appreciate the range and emotion, but I like it.
