Contract Dispute between Nokia and InterDigital Resolved

Nokia and InterDigital have resolved their contract dispute over a patent license both companies agreed to in 1999. The companies had a dispute regarding the impact of InterDigital’s licenses with Ericsson and Sony-Ericsson to Nokia. The recently reached settlements resolve the legal disputes related to 2G products.

Under the settlement , Nokia receives license to all of InterDigital’s current patent portfolio, and any future 2G patents InterDigital may later acquire. This includes the making and selling 2G products, handsets and infrastructure.

The settlements also resolve disputes related to all Nokia products up to the agreement date. “Our prior contract agreement required us to respect the settlements that Ericsson and Sony-Ericsson entered in 2003, but there was a dispute about the impact those other settlements should have on Nokia, ” said Ilkka Rahnasto, Vice President, Intellectual Property Rights, Nokia. “This case demonstrates that legal disputes are sometimes necessary in order to lower unrealistic demands”.

The $253 million (US) required payment is in line with Nokia’s earlier provisions.

Nokia hasn’t really been rushing to get a new device in our faces everyday unlike other manufacturers. However, when Nokia does do something it grabs attention as the news about the NSeries phones multimedia computers has done for the past few days.

The Gold Nokia 8800 is another example and for a few thousand dollars (US) you get the bragging rights of paying for a 24k gold phone, not much else. The Tri-band phone does have Bluetooth, EDGE and media playing capabilities… but a 0.5 megapixel camera? Come on.

The talk time is another thing too, but it is gold..

Nokia Press Conference Part 2

Highlights from today’s Nokia’s press conference that caught my attention.

- Nokia announces partnership with Flickr no specific plans or roadmap was announced however from Nokia’s earlier presentation we can expect tight integration and expansion with Flickr.

- Nokia Nseries N93 announced
3.2 Megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics
DVD quality video capture Claims to be the best video recording capability available
3x optical zoom
20x digital
Bluetooth

From the Nokia press release
“The Nokia N93 marks a new era in the digital camcorder market,” said Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president and general manager of Multimedia, Nokia. “Incorporating all the features you need for great quality movie-making, the Nokia N93 is a fantastic example of a multimedia computer with true digital camcorder performance at its core. Thanks to its connectivity, it allows you to immediately share the memories you’ve captured, taking the entire camcorder experience to the Internet age.”

- Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 will allow you to burn DVD direct from your Nokia N93

- Nokia NSeries Studio interactive community which will allow members to make films and exchange ideas created and inspired by using Nokia NSeries devices in particular the N93. To find out more about Nokia NSeries Studio visit

Presentation is wrapping up. What I’ve gathered primarily from the press conference aside from the expected product announcements is the major shift of Nokia’s focus from connectivity of phone calls to intensely expanding further into other platforms, primarily computing and also changing what people think of when you mention Nokia.

During the Q&A several times mention was made of “mobile phones” The responses all began by using the term mulitmedia computers.

Also when asked if Nokia was planning on going head-to-head against Apple in terms of content and creating a music store. No direct clear-cut response was given.

Nokia Press Conference Part 1

We’re 45 minutes or so into the press conference and no device announcements just yet. I’ll just post what Nokia has said so far that has caught my ears.

- Nokia see the NSeries as a multimedia computer and not as a mobile phone.

- The Nokia Head of Design Strategy spoke and made mention of user orientated computing citing such concepts of of snapping a photo and having it on Flickr in 10 seconds, then in 30 seconds having 5-10 people view the photo then within the first minute being able to receive a comment on your phone.

- Nokia N72 Multimedia Device
2 megapixel camera
Dedicated capture and music keys
Integrated browser
Visual Radio
Colors: Pink or black
MP3 player
FM stereo

- Nokia says MP3 player is limiting, society is demanding for music anywhere all the time and that being able to download and access new music immediately is becoming a requirement. Nokia sees the MP3 player as being an incomplete solution.

- Nokia says they we’ll be the best MP3 playing device on the market says simplicity is the key as the Nokia does not need to connect to another device to access Album, info, playlists and seamless access.

Right now Nokia is highlighting the success of marketing the Nokia N91 as a mobile music device and stressing the musical aspect of all NSeries devices. Stay tuned…

The Nokia N91 – A Year Later and Still A Tough Phone to Beat

According to cellphonedigest the phone with tomorrows technology from last year has finally been made available.

Despite the long wait until releasing the Nokia N91, BigBerries is still excited about this phone. The N91 has enough bells and whistles to make many buyers gleeful; tri-band with UMTS, Wi-Fi, 2 megapixel camera, EDGE, Bluetooth, USB 2.0 and of course the 4GB microdrive.

The Nokia N91 plays multiple music formats including MP3, M4A, AAC and WMA.

The Nokia N91 however will take advantage of the Symbian OS v9.1. I really hope a Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 version somehow makes it’s way to the light as this phone is like totally doing everything. Like oh my gosh!

All Nokia needed to do was slap a QWERTY-esque keyboard on it, added a MicroSD slot and they could have staged a coup.

Need a full blown review hit infosync, or skim the spec sheet at phonescoop, get the corporate story at Nokia.

That’s like three or four articles about Nokia today and I don’t even think we covered MIT and the Nokia Research Center.

Ajax Goodness Coming to Nokia

I really don’t like posting stories about the same company back-to-back, which is the explanation of why if you read mention of upcoming news but never see it. Either that or the story just gets skipped.

Anyway, Symbianwatch recently noted that Nokia is evaluating broader use of AJAX in its devices. In particular Nokia is looking to expand the use of AJAX with its open source browser. Nokia, who also is Python friendly feels AJAX is very important but believes the success of AJAX implementation largely depends on having support from the Nokia developer community.
