After everything you do outside on Valentine’s Day, if you’re not in a mad rush to do other things when you get inside, you might be watching a movie. I know some of our readers no doubt have had this planned form the beginning.
First let’s say what is not on the list. This list of movies that you’re going cuddle up with someone and watch does not include Ghost or Dirty Dancing. So that effectively removes Patrick Swayze from the equation.
Titanic, Sleepless in Seattle and Pretty Woman don’t get passes either. Your sweetheart probably has already seen them. So skip them, unless these movies are their favorites, then it’s an easy win for the home team.
Fortunately for you BigBerries has put together an awesome romantic movie list. Merely mentioning some of these flicks will get you points scored. Even if you don’t watch them you win. Now on with the list.
Love and Basketball
This one might surprise the both of you. A great story that starts from childhood and follows the lives of two athletes and the different paths their lives takes them.

Frankie & Johnny
Often overlooked and readily available for rental. The impeccable Al Pacino as usual delivers the goods. Did I forget to mention Michelle Pfeiffer?
I’m sure you’re surprised at the movie list so far. Remember, we’re aiming for romantic effectiveness not popularity. So keep reading because these movies are winners for Valentine’s day or any other.

Splendor in the Grass.
This one is here as the 60′s throwback. We love classics and Audrey Hepburn flicks like Roman Holiday or Sabrina, but this gets the nod instead. There’s Natalie Wood and the fact this is an often overlooked gem.

Il Postino
What list of romantic movies would be complete without the required foreign film? I can’t say if it’s the history behind the scenes or the story itself. A tad over tens years of age, Il Postino is aging like a classic.

Tristan and Isolde.
When we picked this up I really wasn’t thinking I would be impressed, but it had enough action, lies and entanglement that long before the movie ended I was won over.

In Love and War
The Hemingway love story, what a bad break. If your lover is unfamiliar with his story, they’ll be clinging on till the very end. This movie still gets mentioned from time to time as it brought about lots of emotion.

Dark Victory
A guaranteed Oscar winner, had it not been for Gone with the Wind. Be sure to have plenty of tissues and your loving comfort, readily prepared and available for this Bette Davis classic.
Sense and Sensibility
With countless Jane Austen stories to choose from, this 1995 adaptation gets all the good parts without taking away a week of your life.
Before Sunrise and Before Sunset
If you can handle a rare glimpse of honesty on film, you will enjoy Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in their evening encounter that sparks love. Before Sunset is the follow up story which picks up roughly ten years later and adds a few complications.
Other movies could be mentioned, but many really good movies are 3+ hours. On a romantic night we’re not staring at the box that long. Especially when we could be looking into the eyes of someone filled with passion.
